Steve Baskin is an Atlanta-based Pop Americana singer/songwriter. Steve and his incredible band, The Fourteens, have just released his fifth full-length record.
The new record is called Love Is Hard and it brings a grown-up perspective of love from just about every angle. Infatuation, marriage, family, community and losing someone close. With the help of the Fourteens, Steve delves deeper into the Pop-Americana sounds introduced on his previous release.
Music Connection Magazine calls Baskin a “gifted lyricist” combining "Blue-eyed American soul, country, pop and rock 'n' roll to great effect.” Skope Magazine describes Steve as “a smart lyricist” who “deserves to be better known. He’s quietly creating a strong catalogue of songs.”
Tinnitist Magazine describes the sound as being “set against a late ’70s-style backdrop that suggests members of The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Eagles and Fleetwood Mac channeling Al Green at Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios in Memphis. It’s the kind of sophisticated, deliberate statement that comes only with decades of hard-earned experience — at life, love and music.”
Frequenze Musicali (Italy) said “the authenticity of Steve Baskin's soul music is impressive. He cut his teeth on the road accompanying legendary artists such as Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), Percy Sledge, Carla Thomas and The Shirelles.”
In addition to a long list of legendary Soul artists, Baskin has shared the stage with greats like The Beach Boys, June Carter Cash, Don McLean, Cindy Wilson (B52s), Rob Thomas and others. And as his song Dinner with Lou states, he really did have dinner with Lou Reed and he did meet J-Lo at the Garden.
Some accolades for Mind Your Step (2020):
Melissa Clarke of Americana Highways advised, “Mind Your Step is a must-have for anyone who fancies swaggery music with horns.” She went on to say that with Big Wedding, Small Divorce, he “has captured a unique slice of contemporary life in a musical whirlwind of truth.”
Glide Magazine premiered the title track and said: “Shining brightly with infectious Stax-style grooves and horns, the song is a soulful anthem that feels real and direct. Baskin’s vocal balance of Americana rocker and soul singer is a perfect fit for this R&B-laced tune bursting with organ, a powerful beat and a hard-hitting chorus.”
Dan MacIntosh at Skope Magazine says “there isn’t a throwaway song on this album.” Mind Your Step is an album that’s easy to love, from the very first listen.”
“Steve Baskin is a smart cookie,” says Dave Franklin at Dancing About Architecture. “He knows how to take a whole bunch of musical genres, ones that already share a certain amount of musical DNA and finds the perfect way to dovetail them together so that they complement rather than clash, and the result is a great rock ’n’ soul record.”
